PSYCHIC BOOM

This article concentrates to a certain extent on laboratory experiments involving ESP because that is where the most definitive scientific investigations of disputed psychic occurrences have been carried out.

While reports of spontaneous psychic phenomena are plentiful, scientist prefer to set up experimental situations where various sources of error, such as observer bias, can be ruled out.

In the popular understanding, "psychic" covers a motley accumulation of beliefs and happenings that defy a single definition. It may include occult, apparently supernatural, and (to some) irrational topics such as fortune telling; character analysis by graphology or phrenology; dowsing; faith healing; witchcraft; poltergeist; out-of-body experiences; unidentified flying objects (UFOs); and reincarnation and communication with the dead.

It may include phenomena within the realm of parapsychology, which many responsible scientific investigators reject as unproved but which others accept as verified: extrasensory perception or ESP (telepathy, clairvoyance and precognition) and psychokinesis or PK (moving objects by mental effort). And finally it generally encompasses what we have recently come to be called "altered states of consciousness" - hypnosis, dreaming, drug-induced states and established Eastern forms of meditation such as Yoga, Zen and transcendental meditation.

AN EXPERIMENTAL MILESTONE

Where will psychic research go next? One of the major domains undoubtedly will be altered states of consciousness (ASCs). One [of several trends] is the deliberate effort by many people to enter an altered state either by taking such drugs as Marijuana or LSD or by learning self-hypnosis or some meditative process. It may not be sufficient just to observe ACSs from the outside. [Charles T. Tart, associate professor of psychology at the University of California, Divas] argues that much current research is "relatively trivial" because it does not focus on the real experiences involved. "Experiences of ecstasy, mystical union, other 'dimensions,' rapture, beauty, space/time transcendence, transpersonal knowledge and the like, common in ASCs are simply not treated adequately in the most conventional scientific approaches." The solution, according to Tart, is to develop "state-specific sciences," utilizing skilled, trained researchers who are able to achieve certain states of consciousness. Within each state they can approach specific problems using the scientific method - making observations that can be confirmed by others in that state, theorizing about their findings and then testing their theories by predicting the consequences and seeing whether the theories hold true.

THE REACTION OF SCIENCE

This is an area of heated controversy. Edward U. London [writes], " Flying saucers and astrology are not the only pseudo-sciences... there used to be spiritualism, there continues to be extrasensory perception, psychokinesis, and a host of others... In my view, publishers who publish or teachers who teach any of the pseudo-sciences as established truth should, on being found guilty, be publicly horse-wipped..."

William James, the first great American psychologist, served as president of the Society for Psychical Research (London England) and investigated several phenomena himself, including the accomplishments of a medium. Of these particular woman he said, "[I] believe she has supernatural powers." But he also exposed another medium, about whom he wrote, "Everyone agrees she cheats in the most barefaced manner whenever she gets an opportunity."

Prominent people from almost every walk of life have expressed serious interest in psychic phenomena. Actress Marlena Dietrich tried to persuade the secretary-general of the Untied Nations to reschedule a General Assembly meeting because the astrological portents were bad for a certain time. The exact amount of popular interest, stimulated by events such as these, is difficult to measure. The practice of witchcraft was notably increased following the appearance of the movie Rosemary's Baby, in which a witches' coven practiced black magic.

THE NEW FRONTIER

Searching for new ways to improve mankind, many persons have actively challenged established values and approaches. They question the findings of "rational" science and may seek new avenues to fulfillment and involvement through an exotic experience such as meditation or exposure to the occult. They may argue that if rational man cannot control his own future, why not accept astrology and let the stars do it?

The leading investigator of ESP for several decades has been Joseph Banks Rhine, first at Duke University and then at the Foundation for research on the Nature of Man, at Durham, NC. The principal technique utilized by Rhine involved a pack of cards with only five symbols. Five cards with each symbol make up a pack of 25 cards. If an individual were to guess the identity of each card in order, without seeing it, just on the basis of chance he would get one out of five correct. The odds against chance occurrence of any score can be calculated statistically.

Rhine conducted what he considered a milestone experiment in 1933. The subject Hurbert E Pearce, Jr, performed well on preliminary trials (once scoring 25 "hits" out of 25) and was to be given a particularly careful test with "conditions thoroughly adequate to exclude all the factors that could produce extra-chance scores except ESP." Pearce was in the Duke University library, 100 yards away from a building where Rhines assistant, JG Pratt, was to turn over the cards. They conducted 12 runs or 300 trials. Pure chance would have produced 60 hits, but Pearce scored 119. "A score as large as this," Rhine wrote, "...Would be expected to occur by chance only once in approximately a quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) of such experiments." Therefore chance could be ruled out. "There are no know sensory processes that could be supposed to operate under these conditions... we... were forced to decide that, whatever clairvoyance or the extrasensory perception of objects is, this was a case of it."

Poised upon her toes to where she rests upon the Western Horizon upon her finger tips. NUT forms the vault of the sky. Ra is borne throughout the darkness and men followed him until he appears again and sheds light upon the earth.

The Shimmering Egg from which the God Of Brightness first appeared is Ra the diviner, father and ruler of gods.

That which he named had being, his gaze into space appears before him as all-human-kind born from his eye. He bade the heavens and earth to rise out of Nu.

From the Divine Waters the Celestial Mother lifted Ra upon her back. Ra, upon the nature of his being utters the words that come to being.

"Lo ! I am Kheper at dawn, Ra at noon-tide and Tum at eventide."

Each day Ra walked forth, and the gods who were of his train followed him, and he sat upon his throne.

Those who he first created according to his desire were Shu and his consort Tefnut. Seb and Nut became the parents of Osiris, Isis, Set and Nepthys.

To Osiris will be given power over the dead and Horus will be exalted on the throne which is set upon the island of firery flames.

Ra spake again and called forth the god Thoth who came into being by his word.

"For thee, O Thoth I shall make a resplendent abode in the great deep and the underworld which is Duat. Thou shalt record the sin and splendor of men."

So came into being by his power the Ibis, the Crane, and the Dog Ape, the messengers of Thoth.

"Thy beauty shall be shed through the darkness; thou shalt join night with day."

So came into being Ah, the the moon of Thoth. When all the land is black, the sun-bark of Ra passes through the tweleve-divisions of night in Duat. At eventide, when Tum is old and frail, five-and-seventy invocations are chanted to give him power to overcome the demons of darkness. He enters the Western gate, through which dead men's souls pass to be judged. Before him goes Anubis, for he is the Opener of the Ways. When the sun bark enters the river of the underworld the companions of Ra are with him.

The darkness of the first-division is scattered by the brighness of Ra. Besides sek-met gather the pale shades of the newly dead.

At the end of the first-division is a high and strong wall, and a gate is opened by incantations so the bark of Ra may pass through. So from division to division, all throught the perlious night, the sun god proceeds, and the number of demons that must be overcome by magic.

Apophis, the great White serpent, ever seeks to overcome Ra.

Fith hour-division is the domain of dreaded Sokar, the underworld god, with three human heads. His abode is in a dark and secret place which is guarded by fierce sphinxes. Night to him is the drowning Pool, watched over by five gods with bodies like to men and animals' heads. Strange and mysterious forms hover nigh, and in the pool are genii their heads aflame with everlasting fire.

In the seventh hour-division sits Osiris, divine judge of the dead. Firery serpents, which are many-headed, obey his will.

Whom Osiris, divine judge, deems to be worthy, he favors; such shall live in the Nether World: whom he finds full of sin, he rejects and these do the serpents fall upon dragging him away.

In this division of peril the darksome Night seppent Apophis attacks the sun bark (sek-met), curling its great body round the compartment of Ra with ferocious intent to devour him. But the allies of the god contend against the serpent; they stab it with Knives until it is overcome

Isis utters mighty incantations which cause the sun bark to sail onward unscathed or stayed.

In the eighth division are serpents which spit forth fire to illumine the darkness, and in the tenth are fierce water reptiles and ravenous fishes. The god Horus burns great beacons in the eleventh hour; ruby flames and flames of gold blaze aloft in beauty: the enemies of Ra are consumed in the fires of Horus.

The sun god is reborn in the twelfth hour-division. He enters the tail of the mighty serpent, which is named Divine Life, and issues from its mouth in the form of Khepera, the beetle. Those who are with the god are reborn also

The last door of all is guarded by Isis, wife and sister of Osiris, and Nepthys, wife and sister of Set, in the form of serpents. They enter the sun bark with Ra.

Now Urnes the river of Duat, flows into the primeval ocean in which Nu must abode. And as Ra was lifted out of the deep at the beging, so he is lifted by Nu at dawn. he is then received bu Nut, goddess of the heavens; he is born of Nut and grows in majesty, ascending to high noon.

The souls of the dead utter a loud lamentation when then the sun god departs out of the darkness of Duat.

The ancient Egyptians postulated seven souls.

Top soul, and the first to leave at the moment of death, is REN, the secret name.This corresponds to my director. He directs the film of your life from conception to death. The secret name is the title of your film. When you die, that's where REN came in.

Second soul, and second off the sinking ship is SEKEM: energy, power, light. The director gives the orders, SEKEM presses the right buttons.

Number three is KHU, the guardian angel. He, she, or it is the third man out... depicted as flying away across a full moon, a bird with luminous wings and head of light. sort of thing you might see on a screen in an Idian restaurant in Panama. The KHU is responcible for the subject and can be injured in his defense - but not permanently, since the first three souls are eternal. They go back to heaven for another vessel. The four remaining souls must take their chances with the subject in the LAND OF THE DEAD.

Number four is BA, the heart, often treacherous. This is a hawk's body with your face on it, shrunk down to the size of a fist. Many a hero has been brought down, like Samson, by a perfidious BA.

Number five is KA, the double, most closely associated with the subject. The KA, which usually reaches adolescence with the time of bodily death, is the only reliable guid through the LAND OF THE DEAD to the WESTERN LANDS.

Number six is KHAIBIT, the shadow, memory, your whole past conditioning from this and other lives.

Number seven is SEKHU, the remains.

I first encountered this concept in Norman Mailer's Ancient Evenings, and saw that it corresponded precisely with my own mythology, devoloped over a period of many years, since birth in fact.

Lots of people don't have a KHU these days. No KHU would work for them. Mafioso Don: "Get offa me, KHU crumb! Worka for a living!"

BA, the heart: that's sex. Always treacherous. Suck all the SEK out of a man. Many BAs have poison juices.

The KA is about the only soul a man can trust. If you don't make it, he don't make it. But it is very difficult to contact your real KA.

SEKHU is the physical body, and the planet is mostly populated with walking SEKHUS, just enough SEK to keep them moving.

With the right vantage point, one would be able to observe an infinite sea of universes. With the right vantage point, one be able to observe this endless amount of universes all pulsating, as each is in a seperate state of expansion or contraction.

This expansion and contraction being an un-ending contex of reoccurring explosions. This unending contex of reoccurring explosions referred to as entropy. Because of entropy, all movement is involuntary. The cosmos as one big perpetual-motion machine.

Out of this entropy, these reoccurring explosions, emerge three different types of wave forms. Each type vibrating at a different velocity.

These three different wave forms are referred to as mind, matter, and nothingness. And similarity in the movements of these wave forms being totally coincidental as all movement is random.

The movements of wave forms of matter and nothingness are referred to as information. And the movements of the wave form of the mind is referred to as perception.

The movements of the mind is different from that of the other two wave forms, because more often than not, there is greater amount of bending and winding in the vibrations of the mind then there is in either that of matter or nothingness.

Whenever there is similarity between the movements of matter and nothingness there emerges a contex referred to as an object.Whenever there is a similarity between the movements of all three wave forms there emerges a contex referred to as an organism.

An object is an accident that is unaware of itself. Because of this, an organism is referred to as being without a sole.

An organism is an accident that is aware of itself. Because of this, an organism is referred to as having a sole.

A sole is simply the contex of the accidental similarity between the random movements between the wave forms of the mind, matter, and nothingness.

Because the three wave forms move at different velocities, they never touch each other; ever. The state of being separate like this is referred to as reality.

Since the three wave forms are totally separate from each other, the body of an organism moves completely independent from the organism's mind. Body consisting of the two wave forms of matter and nothingness. The mind consisting only of the wave form of the mind.

The mind only effects the mind. Matter only effects matter. Nothingness only effects nothingness. Influence is never past on from one type of wave form to another.

When an organism's mind is making its involuntary measurements of the involuntary interactions between the body's matter and the matter of something else, it is an event which is referred to as being the organism doing something.

The mind is not located inside one's body. The mind is in between the body which is in between the mind and nothingness.

Because everything is an accident of one kind or another, everything is meaningless. Because everything is meaningless, everything has the potential to be whatever one wants to make of it. Because of this, everything is whatever it is, regardless what one thinks it is.

Thought and meaning are the something. Because meaning is the measurement of information, thought is measurement of information. Because of this, there would be information regardless if there were any thought or meaning at all.

Free will is the predictability of personality, because motivation is the structure of aesthetic bias. This fact is referred to as emotion.

For some planets, a magnetic field is generated by the central part of the planet's core rotating at a different velocity than the rest of the planet.

While leaving a language symbol as found, the process referred to as information retexturalization is the abstracting of the meaning behind the language symbol.

what is this responsibility thing that keeps coming up? i think what i'm referring to is more about a value system. one of my first memorys of san francisco is "what do you value" stenciled in green paint all over north beach.

a personal value is a responsibility to ones self. the solitary act of 'responsibility' 'being responsible' is a vague, meaningless notion that you hear so often. it is vague and meanigless because it implies nothing that one could be responsible to or for.

i guess what i'm sensing is this innate programming left over from the 'christian school' days. (one trait i proudly share with marilyn manson). i,m also very concerned about my breath. i dont think i breath right. an emotional coil.

The issue of truth often comes-up in daily conversation, situations and with interactions between people. One of the most ingenious inventions of human-kind is the lie. Knowing what truth is is more than a subjective realization, yet how do we know when someone is being completely honest with you. Completely is a major key word here as honesty seems to be a complete concept, but there are parts and segments of being 'honest'.

The Truth i seek to know is personal. What i choose to keep for my-self, is just that. My relation-ships in the world must be as clear and precise as they can be, less i loose a sense of 'who i am'.

All anyone can do to limit themselves is just that. This then becomes, in my mind, the issue of entitlement. [which is that whole ego-thing] whether one is to 'have' or 'not' is ones own question. What 'having' is is another definition entirely; but closely remnant of the issue i began talking about, limitation. language is limitation. 'being lost for words' is a good example of a languages paradox. Language is prejudice, as is shear definition, being that one-thing is-and not of another. Language is art, like a finely crafted still. There are some good filmmakers i know and some that i would like to meet and create an imazing independent feature film with. The script is always dangling in my head at any one given moment...

The self-is a fragile thing, prone to miscommunication, mis-understanding, and the list can and does go on... right into that-one-dimensional point of irresistibility; responsibility: of actions; words; in-action; consequence; and as a dear friend once would have said, "the whole tamale". It's whatever you want. Its whatever you want it to be. Its what ever-is-now.

Ultimately, I am responsible for every image I create, every word I speak. The picture like the spoken or written language is equally as apt, if not a superior means of relating meaning, metaphor, subtleties of expression, desire, pain, hunger. These expressions are often better left unsaid in polite conversation, however. Can we ever truly see behind the context of situation? The ruling "I" always remains as subtext, contextualizing, relating each situation to an ultimate personal experience. I can not look behind your eyes unless you see the same thing as I, yet how do we know we are seeing the same thing? More than not the "I" is well aware of the inverse.

Responsibility is not ultimate. Cause and effect cease to effectively influence entropy. Relativity is not always relative. Time not always linear. To be truly alone one must cease to contemplate the picture yet only after it has been sufficiently contemplated.

There is a perfect moment within a painting: a moment when all elements converge in one specific time/space. The work becomes harmonious with itself as well as with it's environment and the painter who brings it's aesthetic life into being. I have been painting seriously now for just more than a year and a half since my introduction to the craft ten years ago in San Francisco. I am fortunate to have the influence of many 'bright' artistic beings of whom I am solely indebted for their constant inspiration, support and kindness; which transcends a mere "thank you" and in turn becomes true impetus. The choice to paint becomes increasingly determinate. The "idea" of painting becomes more paradoxical, illusive but necessary.

I remember vividly the first lecture in art theory: "how to market your self as an artist" being a young new artist in a fresh new city, hungry for experience and intensity, that seemed to be of least particular interest. Now that reality seems just as perplexing.. My desire to paint is spawned by my desire to create and live creatively in my immediate environment.

The past year has afforded me to reacquaint myself with the task of painting, to see exactly "what comes out" after re-approaching the canvas. My life as my art is freer and more demanding than it ever has been. Demanding because it relies on my sole intention and motivation to further shape its destiny. Freer because essentially, my time is my own, a concept it has not always been. I find this most challenging as well as an un-bequeathable blessing.

The perfect moment I mention in painting when it happens unexpectedly - there you are - face to face with your labor, your intensity, your metaphysics, your nebulas future, your un-mutable past all there for your, mine and as well as everyone else's aesthetic inspection.

It is the eye of the storm as well as the eye of the beholder, the center of the moon, the moment; clear and buoyant. This moment is likely to happen only once in a painting but it is often reoccurring and just as likely to happen before the painting is finished. It may be highly illusive leaving the me with only an "idea of" if it has or actually will happen; but mostly, I know when its there.

This of course leads to other philosophical issues like "what comes after a perfect moment" and "when is a painting finished."

My art is a summation of history and knowledge as viewed from my inner being. A clear visual picture of what history is, is what I fear I lack the most. There are too many gaps my culture has left, it has not provided me with enough history of knowledge, a knowledge that wakes up every morning and sees that long road back. Yet even in this self admitting lack of knowledge, I do not disavow my philosophy. I paint what I know. This is my struggle.
